Research Grant Results Presented on Thursday Meetings

Thursday, March 4, within the weekly activities of the Center for Research in Communication called Thursday Meetings, members of the Center and other faculty staff presented the research results of a research grant called The Media Construction of Europeanization as Public Problem in Context of European Integration of Romanian Society.

The project manager, Dr. Constantin Schifirneţ, presented the general framework under which research was conducted during 2009 academic year, and Drs. Nicoleta Corbu and Valeriu Frunzaru presented the empirical results of a content analysis of TV news and debates covering the 2009 elections for the European Parliament in Romania.

Research shows the most prominent European topics present in news and TV debates are the European Parliament, European Policies, and Structural Funds. It also shows a positive attitude toward the European Union. Moreover, women candidates' media coverage is poor if compared not only to men, but to their positions on election lists as well. Even though women are often well ranked on the election lists, they are rarely invited to television debates and, if a representative of one political party, other than the candidates, is invited, he/she is most likely to be a man.
